Markleeville Turtle Rock Park

Talk about courses here.

Markleeville Turtle Rock Park

Postby Craig Getty on Sun Oct 26, 2008 8:38 am

On October 21st, I aasisted Dave Peets (co. assessor} with a power point presentation to the Alpine Co. Board of Directors, for the purpose of installing a disc golf course in Turtle Rock Park. It was unanimously approved.
Dave will head up the fund raising ($1000 per hole sponsorship) and I get to design and build another alpine course. Markleeville is an hour and 15 minutes from the center of Reno. The Turtle Rock Park course is well treed with good ellevation change and a seasonal creek running through it. The course will be short to medium in length. Camping is available in the park. I expect the course will be ready to play next spring.

You're the man Craig! Keep up the good work. Also, keep me informed on any work days (once the money is in place of course). I'd like to be involved.

That's great! It's always good to see more courses. If only we had more closer to Reno.

I did a redesign of my original layout just after Thanksgiving. I was granted permission to add more property to the course. It now loops around the campgrounds on the back nine. I made sure to keep the holes at least 300' away from any campsite.
This will now become much more difficult and longer course. There will be 2-3 par 4s with one possibly par 5. However with three pin placements per hole, one shorter pin will keep the course somewhat recreational.
Speaking of long and short, I have asked opinions of all levels of golfers. What do you prefer, short and fun recreational course, or tougher more challenging course with a few par 4 or 5 holes?
Let me know your thoughts.

Tougher courses. I can't stand seeing tournaments where 44s are happening. That's not golf. That's putt-putt.

I like it where 65 makes a 1000 rated round. Of course, trees help.

Any updates on this course? Camping on site and playing this one, Kirkwood, and Rick's Revenge would make a fun weekend.

This one is still waiting for funds. I have 18 fly18 tee pads that I am donating to this course sitting in my garage. We will start installing those soon. The baskets should be in by late summer.

Rick's Revenge? Where and what is that?

I guess that it is the name of a town or blip-on-map of some kind. If you go to dgcoursereview.com and search the courses by map (clicking in the vacinity of Markleeville), it will come up. It shows that it is less than 30 miles from Markleeville.

There are pics for most courses, reviews, and directions. I love the sight and Reno is finally listed on it as well. It is like porn for us crazy disc golfers.

Thanks for the update and keep us posted.

Ahh....the Bear Valley course. I've heard that the Highway 4 is a very dangerous road to get there.

We broke ground yesterday. 5 tee pads were installed. We'll be back at it today.

Baskets should be going in sometime in September.....no promises

Turtle Rock has purchased baskets, so we will start installing the anchors into the ground this weekend the 19th of September. The baskets will slowly be locked down during the next two weeks. I'm looking at October 10th as "The Opening Day"!

In the mean time the tee boxes are being topped off with decomposed granite and leveled off. Trails are being built from the pin to the next tee. Dead branches are being pruned and cleared. The local volunteer work force headed by Andy Lovel has been fantastic.

The course still has a bit of sage in some fairways, somewhat like Truckee. Especially #18. This should be cleared over time.

There are four par fours (in the long pin placements), with a lot of hard threes.

Camping will be available until the water freezes.

Okay Reno, I've read the start of this thread and we got approval to build this course last Oct.. Within a year the course is completely playable! The population of Markleeville and Woodfords is less than 300. What is the holdup in the Biggest Little City?

I am throwing out a challenge to the Reno course builders. I am starting a new course in Truckee at the Sierra College. The race is on. I say that I will finish that course before The Ranch is complete.

I predict that the Sierra College Course will be complete next July.

Hello..... hello.... is anybody here?

of all the 50+ courses i've played in my 3+ years of disc, Turtle Rock I believe is my favorite. Awesome job on the layout. So many downhill shots with very little uphill. Ace runs and challenging holes. Great job Craig once again. Been 3 times in the last 2 weeks and i'm jonesing for more. No more bijou and kirkwood, turtle rock all day!
